Cheating Hearts: The Psychology Behind Hypocritical, Philandering Public Officials

Have you ever wondered how it comes to be that those who are so adamant about morality (e.g. sexual) are often caught in compromising positions in their personal life?

It is an interesting psychological phenomenon.

An ABC News Report (article) expounds on some of the psychological theories behind this behavior. Take former President Clinton and his affair with Monica Lewinsky and how strongly he denied having sex with her. There are numerous examples of high ranking Catholic priests who preach abstinence who have engaged in promiscuous behaviors.

This article brings to mind the following cliche' which states, "Do as I say, not as I do."

"These men, and most are men, sometimes believe their high station in life makes them exempt from the rules, and in other cases are trying to work out their own inner demons by admonishing bad behavior in others, psychologists said."

"Often the people who speak loudest about something are trying to protect themselves from their own urges. They act out one way on the public stage, but inside they have this urge..."

"....it's (a) psychological phenomenon when preachers do (something against what they preach). They have to appeal to the public, but it is not necessarily what they really believe..."
