On My PhD Studies in Psychology...

Well. Sorry for boring some of you with this post, but to me...this topic is rather exciting. I've determined some topics for my research this term in two classes I'm taking (a History of Psychology course and one on Psychological Tests & Measurements). In virtually every course, there is a research project in which we students apply course concepts into a specialized area of interest. Thus far, I've related most of coursework to either that of teaching college Psychology or in the arena of love/romance relationships (on accounta being a Romance Author and cornball romantic-head).

Here are my two projects for this Summer Term:

1. Dating Compatibility Psychometrics by Doreen Lewis
A Proposed Final Term Paper
Abstract

A growing number of Americans (an estimated 16 million) visit dating websites in hopes of finding a mate. Among these websites, many employ academic psychometric tools to determine dating compatibility. The proposed term paper describes current measurement tools and scales used in determining couple compatibility. A literature review will be presented and include analysis and evaluation of assessment types and psychological tests from the perspective of a psychology student who is a romance novelist with an aspiration to write self-help psychology books in the future. The psycho-social implications of testing in the online arena of couple relations will be discussed parallel and in contrast to more traditional methods of dating. Evaluation and recommendation of psychometric tools will be discussed, as well as the goals and implications for future utilization of such tools.

2. Focus on Robert Sternberg, A Major Theorist on Love by Doreen Lewis
A Proposed Final Term Paper
Abstract

The proposed term paper will trace the life, influences and ensuing theories of Robert Sternberg, a contemporary major psychologist who is currently an IBM professor of Psychology and Education at Yale University. While Sternberg is best known for his contributions to psychological thinking on human intelligence, human creativity, thinking styles, learning disibilities, and love (each of which will be reviewed), the focus of this paper shall be on Sternberg’s love theories. Included will be a literature review of his theories, research on perceptions of love, and comparisons to other major works parallel to Sternberg’s. His theoretical models will be integrated within a personal framework by a general psychology student and instructor who is a romance novelist seeking to write and publish academically on the concept of love from a psychological perspective. Goals and implications for future utilization of such theories by the learner will be presented.

Hi there. I noticed that you're interested in the History of Psychology. We've just launched a new blog -- Advances in the History of Psychology (at www.yorku.ca/ahp/) -- that might interest you.

Good luck with your projects! They look interesting.
