If You're Inspired to Write...

That I write books is not something I announce readily in working with others--not that I'm not proud of my work or enthralled with what I do, but it's like anything--if the topic arises, then it's mentioned. Usually in my day-to-day conversations, the fact that I write is irrelevant to whatever task is at hand.

I was thinking today, however, that what I often get from people when it is discovered or revealed that I've got a couple of publishing credits to my name, that they, too, have either toyed with writing and never finished something, feel they have a book inside of them, or wish they could write.

Does that describe you too, perhaps?

I was thinking today about how all of us often forgo trying new things because we think either we haven't the skills, the time, or that it would be a distraction from other worthy endeavors. I'd like to respond to this...

To me, writing is a solidary experience--a tad selfish and indulgent, but nonetheless, one of the most cathartic, rewarding and enriching experiences in all of life. Whoever said writing is for great talented people? It is for everyone. If you desire to write--dammit--do it! No one is watching. DO IT!

As you write, you may not know how to plot, express or really get where a comma goes. Forget all that. Get your stuff down on the page. Keep going. Suddenly, the work takes on a life of its own and you will find you cannot stop, even if you tried. And, another author is born. Another book evolves.

Doesn't matter if you're writing for a publisher, or a journal to yourself. It doesn't matter if a poem follows some format. It's all good stuff.
